What is lathe machining?
Apr 27, 2025

Lathe machining is a common method of machining in which metals and other materials are cut and processed by means of a lathe. Lathe machining is usually used to machine workpieces of cylindrical, conical, spherical, threaded and other shapes, including shaft parts, bearing housings, flanges, threads, gears and so on.

The process of lathe machining usually includes the following steps:

1. workpiece clamping: the workpiece to be machined is clamped on the spindle of the lathe to ensure the stability and accuracy of the workpiece.

2. tool selection: according to the shape of the workpiece and machining requirements to select the appropriate tool, including external circular tool, internal hole tool, turning tool, grooving tool and so on.

3. Turning operation: through the lathe spindle rotation and tool cutting, the workpiece is turned, including rough turning, finish turning, turning outer diameter, turning inner diameter, turning end face and other operations.

4. machining parameter setting: according to the material, size and precision requirements of the workpiece, set the appropriate feeding speed, spindle speed, depth of cut and other machining parameters.

5. Surface quality control: Ensure that the roughness and flatness of the surface of the workpiece meet the requirements by controlling the cutting speed, feed speed and cutting depth.

6. Thread processing: If the workpiece needs to be threaded, the lathe can be used for external thread turning or internal thread boring.

7. Inspection and Adjustment: The processed workpiece is inspected to check the dimensional accuracy and surface quality, and trimmed and adjusted if necessary.

Lathe machining is a common precision machining method that can achieve high accuracy and high surface quality. With the development of CNC technology, modern lathes have been automated and intelligent, improving processing efficiency and product quality. Lathe machining is widely used in machinery manufacturing, aerospace, automotive manufacturing, mold manufacturing and other fields.
